Loads of fun and something for everyone at the Knysna Friday Night Market
The Friday Market at Knysna Montessori is one of the town’s longest running markets. It has become well established as a dinner market with craft stalls, a children’s play area, live music and a licenced bar. It is a fantastic way to spend early Friday evenings with friends and family in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Food glorious food
The food stalls are what the market is all about. You’ll find the usual market fare and so much more… delicious pizzas, fresh wraps with a variety of fillings, wholesome baked lasagnes, gently warming curries, German currywurst, pork dishes, Thai food and a number of delectable dishes from Knysna Culinary institution, Kilzer Kitchen. The options of delicious food are nearly endless. Not to mention the desserts, sweet treats and baked goods! Along with market traders, some restaurants from the area also sell items off their menu at the market. You can take your meal home, if you like, but it’ll taste so much better if you have it at one of the available tables with a group of friends. The licenced bar sells local craft beers and wines and local musos provide the backtrack to the perfect start to your Friday night.
Arts & crafts
Stalls selling fun crafts and quality goods make for excellent browsing and buying. The number of stalls increases over the Christmas period and you’re sure to find the perfect gifts for the whole family at the market. There is no better way to do Christmas shopping in Knysna.
A haven for kids
Kids love the Friday Market. Besides the scrumptious goodies they get to munch on, there is a play area to keep them busy and loads of open space to run around in. And with many families visiting the market each week, the little ones are bound to make new friends and entertain themselves. On some nights, a face painter will transform your little hero into Spiderman, or your little princess into a beautiful butterfly.
A school fundraiser
The market runs from the first Friday in September until the last Friday in May. There is ample supervised parking, seating, shelter should the weather turn and bonfires to battle the chill of spring and autumn, and to add to the atmosphere. The market is coordinated by a team from the Knysna Montessori School, and held on the school’s fields. It is run as the school’s main fundraiser and the bar is staffed by volunteer parents and school staff.
A chilled evening with great food, good music, and a fantastic atmosphere – what a way to start a fun family weekend. Let the market turn your Friday into a Fri-yay.
Useful information:
- The market is open from 16h00 to 20h00 out of season, and stays open until 20h30 during season.
- It is a good idea to bring a blanket to sit on in case there aren’t any free tables.
- It’s very easy to find: on Friday evenings, look for the scarecrows near the last traffic light as you drive through Knysna towards George. Then simply follow the scarecrows and their signs.
