One of the must-do activities for families is to explore the Goukamma area on the way to Buffalo Bay. Attractions along the Goukamma River warrant at very least a day’s exploration with loads of fun things to do just 12km from Knysna.
Riverdeck Farmstall
Set off early with the kids and family for the first stop, the Riverdeck Farmstall on the left as you head to Buffalo Bay. This is also a great place to stock up for a beach picnic if you are heading that way. The Riverdeck Lodge and Backpackers
Situated on the right hand side of the road heading towards Buffalo beach, the Riverdeck Lodge is set on the banks of the Goukamma River. Lined with numerous indigenous forest trees and in the shade of the old Wild Figs, it’s a place to keep the family entertained for a whole day.
Traditional cuisine
Never heard of South African cuisine food from a potjie-pot? This is the place to remedy that, while bobotie (a traditional Cape Malay curry mince dish) is on the menu along with other authentic South African treats. You can also have a farmhouse breakfast or just an icy beer or glass of wine at the rustic wooden tables on the river’s edge, toes in the sand.
An activity hotspot and haven for kids
With a host of activities offered at the Riverdeck, it is a kids’ paradise. Swimming in the refreshing rich-dark copper coloured waters of the river is an excellent choice because it’s warmer than the sea, and perfectly safe. They can also try the special Catch and Release Fishing spots. There are a large selection of canoes, kayaks, hydro-bikes and paddle boats for hire.
And just to top it off there are a choice of scenic Horseback Out Rides through fynbos, forested valleys or along the beach, while kiddies can enjoy magic miniature horse rides on ponies that don’t bolt or bite.
Abundant bird life in the area is a real treat for birdwatchers. Ask for the bird list at the canoe hire station and take a short stroll along the river’s edge to view a wide variety of Garden Route birds.

Flippin Knysna
A rare and rustic gem serving the best pancakes, cheesecake and coffee, Flippin Knysna is about 1km further – you will see the welcome-barrels on the left pavement as you head towards Buffalo Bay. Set in the old Goukamma station building in lush gardens above what was once a working railway line, the delightful little restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. Sit at rustic wooden tables and enjoy a great cup of coffee or meal watching the kids play in the spacious gardens.
