Prince Alfred’s Pass, South Africa’s longest and most historic mountain pass, will once again take centre stage at the Lions Karoo to Coast MTB, Gravel and E-Bike Challenge on 27 September 2026.
Stretching from Uniondale in the Klein Karoo to Knysna on the Garden Route, the legendary gravel pass forms the heart of the 100km Karoo to Coast route. Riders are treated to a dramatic transition from arid Karoo landscapes to lush indigenous forest, making the event one of the most scenic and sought-after cycling challenges in the country.

Built between 1860 and 1867 by renowned road engineer Thomas Charles John Bain, Prince Alfred’s Pass remains a bucket-list ride for cyclists worldwide. Its steady gradients, wide gravel roads and rich history make it ideal for mountain bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes, catering to both first-time riders and elite competitors.
The route features a total ascent of 1,521 metres and a descent of 2,244 metres, rewarding riders who pace themselves on the long climb with fast, flowing gravel descents. Weather conditions can vary significantly, adding to the challenge and adventure of race day.

Gravel cycling continues to grow in popularity, highlighted by Tristan Nortje’s overall victory on a gravel bike at the 2025 event in a time of 2:56:21. The E-Bike category has also shown rapid growth, supported by a free battery pickup service provided to participants.
Beyond the physical challenge, the Lions Karoo to Coast is deeply rooted in community impact. The event is owned by the Uniondale and Knysna Lions Clubs, with all proceeds donated to people in need. Riders also gain exclusive access to privately owned farmland and rarely ridden sections of the Knysna Forest, including Kom se Pad and the iconic descent into Knysna via Simola Hill.
With nine fully stocked water points, strong volunteer support, and equal prize money for top male and female gravel riders in 2026 — alongside new age-category prizes — the event continues to set the benchmark for inclusive, world-class cycling events in South Africa.
