Knysna and surrounds is in essence a giant playground for children of all ages. Here are a couple of ideas that are sure to entertain your children while on holiday in Knysna.
If you feel like going out for lunch, then head to Muse. Situated just off the N2, there is a large garden that is fenced off on the water side. Kids will be happy to amble around, play a game of cards or climb a tree. There are also lots of vegetarian options on the menu and the chilli poppers are simply divine.  The Friday Night Market is another great option. Take your own fold-up chairs (or grab one of the wooden benches if you can) and enjoy a selection of market stalls and licensed bar area. There are usually tons of children playing around, so your kids will be well entertained. There is a jungle gym and often a selection of toys that a Knysna veteran brings along for kids to hire for an hour or more. Live music may even get them dancing!
East Head Café at the Heads has got a little play area with chalk boards and building blocks. As they are used to children visitors they have a great menu to suit kids’ tastes and are usually speedy when serving their food.
Thesen Island is another great venue. There is a big play area with slides and swings which are in the middle of two restaurants; so take your pick between the two, have a glass of Mitchell’s beer while keeping an eye on the little ones.
Head out to the Rhenendaal Road to a delightful place called Tottie’s (about 14km off the N2). It’s an incredible deal if you are looking for a long and lazy Sunday lunch, but also serves great coffees and sweet treats during the week. Again, there is a large playground at the back of the restaurant which is fenced off and secure.
The Cycad Nursey (located at the turnoff just after the White Bridge from Knysna) has a fenced off playground with a trampoline, jungle gym and sandpit. You can also take a walk around the nursery, pet a friendly donkey and see playful monkeys darting around a large enclosure. There is also a simple tea room where you can get a drink and a pergola with a beautiful view of the Knysna Lagoon.
Activites are plentiful for kids around the area. Go strawberry picking (you can eat as you pick!) at Red Berry Farm near George, or let the kids go wild in Adventureland- a perfect destination for a hot summers day. There are tons of fun waterslides and it even caters for the littlies too.
Along the N2, from Knysna to Plettenburg Bay is The Heath (good food and fun playground), Radical Raptors, Plett Puzzel Park , Birds of Eden and Monkeyland. Each destination with its’ own appeal. Why not spend a day ‘adventure-hunting’ the region?
If all else fails, head to either Urban Dvd or Vee’s Videos to pick up the latest kids movie and settle everyone on the couch with a bowl of popcorn.
