The best way to do your shopping in Knysna is to go by foot. Park your car at the Waterfront parking (its free all day) and start your trip Waterfront where you will find a huge range of curios and artistic local crafts. The items you will find here are of an international standard. Browse around the jewellery shops and pick up a trendy leather handbag. Looking for something small to take back on your flight home? You’ll find oodles of “Knysna-themed” fridge magnets, wire figurines and other original keepsakes.
From the Waterfront, walk up to Gray Street. There are some glorious clothing shops -about two blocks up, on the left hand side- with up to date, fresh looking items for almost any occasion. From beachwear to cocktail dresses and heels you are sure to find something you love. Get beach savvy with a colourful bikini, sun hat and slops; most of the designers are South African too.
Also on Gray Street is a fully equipped fishing tackle shop; one of the best in Knysna. The experienced staff will get you ready for your fishing trip.
If you walk just a bit further up Gray Street, you will find some quirky and unique little shops. Pure India will offer a range of incense and silk-type clothing. Have a browse in each of the shops, as they all have something different and appeal to a spectrum of tastes.
Of course, if you’re looking for the more mainstream shops head over to The Mall. It’s centrally located just off Main Road (the N2). Here you will find Woolworths, Ackermans, Cape Union Mart and places to stock up on boogie boards, snorkelling equipment and even have your digital photos developed.
Across the street from The Mall is Pledge Square, again you’ll find one or two quirky shops. Go to Book Exchange to stock up on your holiday reading.
Woodmill Lane will have your spoilt for choice with shops of all varieties. Woodmill Lane is Knysna’s original old town Sawmill and will be a treat for the kids as they visit the Old Boiler Room and see the original chimney of the Sawmill.
