The Garden Route is a coastal passage that runs between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains, of which Knysna is the heart. Situated on the shore of the Indian Ocean, the natural beauty is astounding. Pristine beaches are bordered by indigenous Fynbos, sandstone mountains roll into beautiful lakes and forests line the backbone of the N2- this is truly a place to revel in.
Most of the natural attractions are situated in Nature Reserves, some of which have been named world heritage sites.Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve and Featherbed Nature Reserve are whole day excursions, which include a ferry across the Knysna Lagoon. Walk along the reserve’s coastline on Featherbed and relax for a picnic after a long walk.
Take a walk in the Knysna Forest, if you are lucky you will spot the Knysna dwarf chameleon which is found in a limited range of forests. The Knysna Forest has a great selection of towering trees; the Outeniqua Yellowwood, Stinkwood and Cape Beech are some of the most common.
Storms River Mouth is in the Tsitsikamma National Park which is a popular spot for visitors. If you’re up for a bit of adventure then walk across a suspension bridge there, you’re sure to have a laugh when you do so. The Storms River Mouth is also the start of the famous Otter Trail.
