Tourism Month in Knysna

September is International Tourism month with this year’s global theme being “Tourism and the Digital Transformation”.

With this theme in mind The Greater Knysna Tourism Information Office will be running a mobile Photographic and videography competition for locals that will call for the community to show their favorite local experiences and locations and in the process help with promoting our beautiful destination and our town’s economy.

There are three different categories to choose from:

  • Adventure and Activities in Greater Knysna - mobile photograph
  • Food and Culture - mobile photograph
  • Or a short Mobile film representing the Greater Knysna area

The best short films will be combined creating a video showing the world the paradise we live in.

These will focus on all of Greater Knysna and surrounds - Sedgefield, Karatara, Rheenendal, Hornlee, Northern Suburbs, Brenton on Sea, Buffalo Bay, and Belvidere.

Entry forms will be available from the Knysna Tourism Information office and the Knysna Municipality Youth Centre’s from 10th September 2018 and the winners will be announced at a venue TBA on International Tourism Day 27th September 2018.

We encourage all the schools in Greater Knysna to encourage their students to participate.

*Note: Tourism establishments that would like to give discounts to their products so they can be included in the content are welcome to contact the visitor’s information office on:

Knysna & Partners launched its #WalkKnysna campaign for Tourism Month with a very informative walk along Swartvlei beach to Gericke’s Point on Saturday 9 September. Walkers were guided by Mark Dixon of Garden Route Trail who is a wealth of information about the intertidal zone and rock pools of Gericke’s Point and the aquatic organisms living here.

The second walk, a fascinating tour of the Rastafarian Community, took place on Tuesday 12 September and was thoroughly enjoyed by an enthusiastic group who had never been to Judah Square before. The tour included a visit to the community’s Educare Centre which accommodates over 40 pre-school children from the area.

The next walk, on Thursday, 21 September is a forest walk with Meagan Vermaas of Forest Guided Tours who will guide walkers along the Jubilee Creek Waterfall Route, a total distance (there and back) of 3,6 km. There is no charge for the walk and entrance to Jubilee Creek is free, courtesy of SANParks for Tourism Month.

Chairperson of Knysna & Partners said: “We are having lots of fun being tourists in our own town for Tourism Month and supporting South African Tourism’s campaign, #WeDoTourism. We look forward to seeing you on the next walk!”

The Knysna & Partners Tourism Month programme also includes two Heritage Day festivals on 24 September – the Sedgefield Craft Beer & Braai Festival at the Sedgefield Village Green, and the Annual DCT Heritage Dam Event at Dam se Bos Sports Ground.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development recalling the potential of tourism to advance the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards a more sustainable tourism sector than can contribute effectively to the SDGs.

"This is a unique opportunity to build a more responsible and committed tourism sector that can capitalize its immense potential in terms of economic prosperity, social inclusion, peace and understanding, cultural and environmental preservation” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.

Accounting for 7% of worldwide exports, one in eleven jobs and 10% of the world’s GDP, the tourism sector if well managed can foster inclusive economic growth, social inclusiveness and the protection of cultural and natural assets.

The International Year will promote tourism’s role in the following five key areas:

(1) Inclusive and sustainable economic growth;

(2) Social inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction;

(3) Resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change;

(4) Cultural values, diversity and heritage; and

(5) Mutual understanding, peace and security.

UNWTO invites all partners to join the celebrations by sharing their activities and initiatives to advance sustainable tourism for development at www.tourism4development2017.org
