Life skills through surfing

Today travellers seek experiences that allow them to interact meaningfully with their destination residents.

Driven by an increasing social awareness surrounding communities that are less fortunate, tourists are seeking ways to enrich their travel experience by lending a helping hand. These tourists are opting to include volunteering activities as part of their vacation experience.

One of the popular backpacking establishments on the Garden Route, Afrovibe Adventure Lodge, Myoli Beach is now offering visiting backpackers an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young children living in the local townships. Their volunteer programme is partnered with Smutsville’s Masithandane, and Sizamile, both Sedgefield based non-profit organisations.

Sedgefield, a coastal Garden Route village is well-known for its various water sports. As many of these sports are inaccessible to the areas disadvantaged children, Afrovibe Adventure Loge owner, Lyle Katzen embarked on his Afrovibe Surf Outreach Project. It is wonderful to see some of Sedgefield’s top local surfers and many passing travellers given up their time to make a difference in the lives of these local youths.

Although this initiative is designed to offer disadvantaged children the opportunities and experiences they would not ordinarily have, the primary goal is to teach them valuable life lessons while having fun.

It is generally accepted that this surf school is the perfect healthy platform from where the children can learn about the importance of their natural environment and why they should respect it. Besides mentoring the children through numerous important life skills, the surf school offers children the opportunity to interact with positive role models, possibly something they do not have within their home.

It is clear to see that Afrovibe Surf Outreach Project Is making positive impact in the lives of many of these local children.
