Karatara lies just north of Sedgefield and approximately 30km west of Knysna. Perched atop the plateau and surrounded by farmland and breathtaking indigenous forests, it comprises Welsyndorp, Bergvallei and Bosdorp. Established in the 1940’s, Karatara served as a housing settlement for the displaced forestry workers active within the Knysna Indigenous Forests at the time.
A scenic drive to Karatara is well worth your while. Turn off the N2 midway between Sedgefield and Knysna and snake your way up towards the forestry settlement. You will drive by gloriously fertile agricultural fields while passing through unexpected patches of pristine indigenous forest. From Karatara you could turn west and follow the Seven Passes scenic drive to the “Big Tree and Picnic Spot” just past Woodville and from there follow the route to George. You could also turn back east from Karatara and make your way to Knysna via the Seven Passes road through Rheenendal and the Phantom pass. Don’t worry, the pass is named for the phantom moth found in the area – or so they say....
