Simola Country & Golf Estate
The Simola Golf and Country Estate was designed by golfing legend, Jack Nicklaus. This 18-hole course is one of only four Golden Bear Signature Courses in South Africa.
Jack wrote that is was his “…aim to create a golf course that will be a demanding test of skill for the accomplished golfer playing from the back tees. But, at the same time, I want to offer a challenging, yet enjoyable experience for the average or beginner player who plays from the appropriate tees and thinks his or her way around the golf course.”
An 18-hole, par 72 course with an unusual configuration of five par 5 and five par 3 holes, visitors can play any day of the week while only members have booking opportunity.

Knysna Golf Course
The Knysna Golf Club, established in 1909, is one of the country’s oldest and most inspiring golf clubs with many tidal pools and inlets, indigenous trees and a variety of bird-life to admire while you play.

Blackwaters Mashie Golf
The Blackwaters River Lodge has a very challenging 9-hole Mashie Golf Course designed specifically to allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
This short course has a variety of distances between the tees and holes with the longest being 152m and the shortest 52m. For its unique golfing experience, Blackwaters has its own set of "local rules" of play, including when to apply penalty strokes, free drops when play is interrupted and drop out zones.

Visit Knysna, the Destination Marketing Organisation for the greater Knysna area recently nominated Mark Dixon of Sedgefield, with his “Moonlight Meander” tours as well as Ypie Kingma to take part in the One Day Virtual Tours campaign launched by Western Cape Government, and Wesgro, the official Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape.
Ypie Kingman’s tour footage, which gives viewers an opportunity to virtually experience a small piece of Knysna, whilst also encouraging and helping them to properly plan their trip to the area was officially launched at this year’s Virtual Knysna Oyster Festival as part of Visit Knysna’s destination promotion campaign.

Ten other local tourist guides who incorporate a broad range of offerings have also been identified to receive more support. In the coming months their footage will officially be launched on Visit Knysna’s social media platforms, whilst Mark Dixon’s moonlight meander tour has launched as a podcast.
Michelle Lencoe of Lithemba Crafts & Tours went on to say: “Remember, every town has its own story to tell and being advertised through the virtual tours the guests get to see and hear different tours and areas of greater Knysna in a short period of time.”

While undoubtedly a tragedy, the COVID-19 pandemic could end up being the accelerator that transforms virtual tours from a luxury addition into a standard baseline expectation. By being reminded to rediscover the environment within which we live, we encourage everyone to re-appreciate the reasons why we live here.
Visit Knysna, the Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO) for Greater Knysna, is launching a treasure hunt-type initiative in celebration of Tourism Month 2019, encouraging locals and visitors to Discover Our World by following clues to various locations in and around our area. “With so much to see and do here in the heart of the Garden Route, we want people to rediscover the sights, experiences and spirit of our beautiful location”, says Visit Knysna General Manager, Colleen Durant.
This activation will launch on the 1 September with clue cards being available at the Visit Knysna office at 40 Main Road, Knysna, our information outlet at the Fijnbosch Coffee Shop, 31 Main Road, Sedgefield or downloadable from our website www.VisitKnysna.co.za .
Participation includes visiting at least 10 of the 18 clues on a clue card. There, take a selfie with the clue – be sure to include your clue card in your selfie – and tag @VisitKnysna and @VisitSedgefield with #DiscoverOurWorld. The initiative includes many local businesses and products who have offered specials and prizes to "discoverers" who are led by the clues to their establishments.
During the course of the month, there are prizes to be won or discounts to be issued by some of the participating products. On World Tourism Day, this being 27 September, we will end the fun with a few lucky draw prizes, hampers of locally made products, for participants that tagged correctly.

This Sunday, SABC News' Trendz Travel programme relaunched with a new logo and a new look! It also featured the first of three inserts on Greater Knysna.
Knysna & Partners is setting off on an exciting journey of discovery, with the launch of a blog series titled “A Slow Route #FoodJourney”. Our stories will highlight food producers and destinations which strive towards the fundamental principles of the Slow Food Movement, which seeks to transform both our relationship with food and the way it is produced. In uncovering these local foodie gems, we hope in turn to promote food tourism in the region and the pursuit of unique and memorable eating and drinking experiences.
The ethos behind the movement is simple. 'Slow Food is good, clean and fair food'. In other words, the food we eat should taste good and be free of harmful additives; it should be produced in a way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.
There is a growing shift globally with regards to the way in which we view our food and the environment as a whole. The food production and consumption systems most common today are destructive to the environment and to the peoples that inhabit it and simply not sustainable. More and more people are seeking to embrace the principles of the slow food movement and it is certainly a growing trend in the Garden Route. This is apparent when visiting any bustling Farmer's Market in the region.
There are several ways in which each of us can adopt the philosophies of the slow food movement. These include:
• Avoid fast food – which damages our health, social fabric and cultural food traditions.
• Get back into the kitchen – Start cooking meals from scratch with food grown locally.
• View meals times as an opportunity to connect and engage with friends and family.
• Buy locally produced food fare - this is a key element to being a Slow Foodie. We are spoilt with wonderful farmers markets, where you can buy fresh produce grown by local farmers. By buying local produce you also radically reduce your carbon footprint.
• Buy organic and free range wherever possible
• If possible, grow some of your own produce, it is incredibly rewarding harvesting food you have grown to feed your family.

Keeping your head down at Simola can be a challenge; simply because the views around the course are awe-enspiring, and with this, it is clear to see why Simola takes its place as one of South Africa's premier golfing destinations. It's also the first Jack Nicklaus Signature course on the Garden Route, reflecting the maestro's philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land.
Situated it the aptly named suburb of Rexford in Knysna, Rexford Manor is a sumptuously appointed guesthouse, with spectacular, high level views of the historical town of Knysna and the picturesque lagoon.
This year’s revered Leisure Isle Festival (fondly-known as Treasure Ilse Festival) will, as in in the past, add something special to ensure that the festival provides something for everyone on November 7 and 8.
Besides the many crafts, books and plant stalls, this year’s festival includes a very special exhibition. Brian Bruce, renowned classic car collector will display some of his privately owned classic cars. “He will be displaying classic cars dating back to the 1900s right up until the 1970s,” explained Roger Vosey, Leisure Isle Festival convener.
Bruce’s display of classic cars, currently housed in a warehouse in Knysna Industria, will include several old petrol pumps and other memorabilia sure to transport festival goers to yesteryear. Antique car enthusiasts will be astonished to see some of the rare finds that Bruce has in his collection. There is a beautiful 1923 Rolls Royce Shooting Brake as well as a Raleigh Safety Seven three-wheel car that was manufactured in the 1930s. Only 300 were originally made and today, only nine are believed to have survived. Two of the three-wheelers are in South Africa, and one of lives in Knysna. Bruce has not yet decided which cars he will place on display but assured that they would be cars with a rich history. Don’t miss this display as Bruce will be on hand to share his wealth of knowledge throughout the Leisure Isle Festival.

With the current state of electricity within South Africa, festival goers will be well advised to visit Baden Hall at his Solar Power display during the festival. Hall is bound to enthusiastically offer advice and information on this alternate power source.
Over 100 stalls will offer old favourites as well as new items during the festival. Two past firm favourites of the Leisure Isle Festivals, the Leisure Isle Festival Open Gardens and the Knysna Arts Society Art Exhibition have returned to the festival. “We scouted around the Island and chose six gardens to showcase during the festival,” said Voysey. “Special efforts have been made to provide emerging crafters with an opportunity to showcase their products. As in the past, the focus will be on local products and crafts with participating charities running the tea garden, book sale, a beer and wine bar and several other stalls,” said Voysey.
The Leisure Isle Festival committee of Voysey, Bob Hunt, Chris Kay, Lorr Scanlen, Niall Johnston, Peter Godsell, Peter Smith and Sheena Mare have all be extremely productive preparing for this year’s festival. A festival that they believe will outshine all.
This year’s festival charity beneficiaries are Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS), e’Pap Children Feeding Scheme, Knysna/Sedgefield Hospice, Steenbok Nature Reserve, Vermont Old Age Home and Hands and Hearts Centre – incorporating Emzini.
Vosey expressed his heartfelt thanks to the festival’s founding sponsor, Sotheby’s International Realty Knysna, Knysna & Partners, leisure Isle Residents Association and the large number of organisations that provide pro”-bono services. “Without these supporters, the Leisure Isle Festival would not be possible,” he concluded.
For many years the small seaside hamlet, Buffels Bay (fondly dubbed Buffs), just 20km outside Knysna, has lured those drawn to the sea and surf. This beautiful bay is a hub for water sports enthusiasts; surfers, Stand-up-Paddle boarders (SUP) and kayakers. These water lovers often frequent this relatively sheltered beach and during December it buzzes with holiday revellers.
