This year’s Leisure Island Festival, fondly referred to as the Treasure Island Festival, is the ideal place to find unique treasures made by the many talented artists and crafters of the region. Special efforts have been made to provide emerging crafters with an opportunity to showcase their unique products. This year Knysna & Partners has sponsored 11 nominated crafters to participate in this popular festival that has, for many years, proved to be an ideal platform for crafters.
One of the sponsored participants is the exciting new venture called Mama Bear’s Craft Centre in Smutsville, an affiliation of the non-profit organisation freshStart, Sedgefield. Elsie and Deon Cervati are the creative souls behind this ambitious project that aims to create positive change and employment opportunities for the people living in their communities. This project fits seamlessly with the freshStart’s motto of “helping people to help themselves”.
The crafters, who receive remuneration per item, produce a really unique range of items at the Mama Bear Craft Centre. Elsie is very excited and grateful for the opportunity to showcase the creative resourcefulness of her crafters at the Leisure Island Festival. “We are very busy at the moment making all sorts of crafts for the festival”, said Else. Some of the items include woven shopping bags made from recyclable plastic, as well as a variety of items made using mohair off cuts, such as blankets, angels, soft toys and much more.”
Please diarise the dates below and come out in support of our talented community members!

Travellers often comment on the fact that a tour is often made so much more memorable when conducted by a tour guide who is passionate, humorous and engaging.
Being a tour guide is not just about reciting the facts about a certain place, it requires a guide to possess both extraordinary communication skills and a certain amount of charisma – the proverbial X-factor, so to speak.
Knysna & Partners, along with Knysna Municipality, has launched a competition for aspiring tour guides young and old alike. More than 50 applicants will have the opportunity to wow a panel of judges with their communication skills, passion for the region, storytelling abilities, humour and charm and various other qualities that make for a good tour guide.
“We want our future tour guides to take ownership of Knysna’s heritage and its various cultural experiences”, says Glendyrr Fick, one of the key Knysna & Partners organisers of this event. “We want to see within them an entrepreneurial spirit that will allow them to design and conduct an authentic Knysna experience which visitors can enjoy.”
This competition is set to take place at Old Goal Café on 4 November. The applicants will be interviewed by a judging panel, where after those applicants who are seen to possess that certain X-factor will win a tour-guide training course.

The town is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon, which is fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands. These are popularly known as "The Heads", and have become infamous due to the loss of boats and fishermen passing through their treacherous and unpredictable waters. The Paquita, a German vessel, sank on the eastern side of the Knysna Heads way back in 1903. Near them are geological formations, known locally as "The Map Stones." To the north of Knysna, Afro-Montane or temperate rainforest covers the hilly terrain for 20 km until changing to fynbos or macchia high in the Outeniqua Mountains.
Knysna has an oceanic climate (Cfb in the Köppen climate classification). Summers are hot and winters mild to chilly. During the summer, the average maximum temperature reaches about 25 °C (77 °F) and rarely goes above 30 °C (86 °F). The average maximum temperature during the winter months ranges in the area of 16 °C (61 °F) to 17 °C (63 °F). Knysna has one of the richest rainfall percentages in South Africa with the wettest time of year being between June and August. Knysna stays green in all seasons, and its temperate climate makes it a tourist destination all year round.[10]
