Knysna may soon be one step closer to its mission of being THE ultimate Trail Town of South Africa. Later this month CEO of Knysna & Partners, Greg Vogt is scheduled to meet with Ryan O’Dell, a USA representative of the NUE (National Ultimate Endurance) series to discuss the possibility of hosting one of their events right here on our perfectly-suited home turf!

NUE was launched in the United States in 2006 in an effort to promote the fast growing sport of ultra-endurance Mountain Biking (MTB). From its grass roots, NUE has grown significantly and is now a hugely successful and logistically strong MTB movement, that hosts many ‘Long Bike Races in the Dirt’ across the USA, drawing many thousands of participants.

During 2015 the riders had a choice of 13 events that were held in thirteen different USA states. Besides these 13 events they were also offered the new Rincon Challenge 100, a new international race that circumnavigates the Rincon de La Vieja volcano in Costa Rica.

NUE is now looking to add another epic race to its annual calendar of events and if Knysna cracks the proverbial nod, it will be the venue for the 15th race in the National Ultimate Endurance Series. A race that would most certainly place Knysna firmly on the map as being South Africa’s most popular MTB destination. The NUE race would also serve to highlight part of the developing Cape Town to Plett (CA to CX) Route.

Each NUE race course is designed to link the best MTB trails within a local area into “one big, tough, epic ride”. These races are not for sissies. They are some of the toughest, most technically challenging MTB events in the world, which is why NUE has its sights set on Knysna.

The Greater Knysna already area boasts a series of high quality single track MTB trails and is already a popular destination for MTB enthusiasts. This is as a result of the passionate efforts of MTB events companies such as Garden Route Events, which is currently gearing up to host their now legendary GR300 on the 26-28 February. This three day stage race offers mountain biking at its best. This year the Garden Route Trail Park’s sinuous and smooth flowing single track trails have been incorporated into the GR300, making this event even more appealing for some of the top local and international MTB riders.

Hosting the NUE will have very broad marketing potential and far reaching economic boost for Knysna, as our beautiful town will be promoted at each and every one of the events that take place in the US.
