20 things for families with kids to do in Knysna & Sedgefield

  1. Hit the beach! Knysna and Sedgefield together 11 pristine beaches including Bollard Beach on Leisure Island, the safest swimming spot in Knysna, Swartvlei with its lovely rock pools, and Buffalo Bay, Wildside and Myoli beaches for surfers
  2. Garden of Eden: Take the kids for a short 500 m or 1 km stroll along the board walk and bridges through the indigenous forest at Garden of Eden with its centuries old trees including yellowwwods. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the wooden tables and benches provided along the trail. There are water and ablution facilities. Cost: adults R12; children R7.
  3. King Edward VII Big Tree: Also known as the Diepwalle Big Tree, this forest giant is the largest of several enormous Outeniqua yellowwoods growing in the Knysna forests. A short 450m circular forest walk follows a wooden boardwalk, which is wheelchair and baby push car friendly. Picnic tables and benches with barbecue facilities are nestled under the trees. Water & a bush toilet are available. A minimal fee is required for the picnic area in season. At Diepwalle, visit the Forest Legends Museum which tells forgotten stories of the hardworking woodcutters and the mighty Knysna elephant.
  4. Animal sanctuaries: There are a number of animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres on the N2 between Knysna and Plett, which offer awesome animal encounters.   5. Flippin Knys at the Goukamma Station on the Buffalo Bay road serves breakfast, lunch and coffee and is great for pancakes. It’s very child-friendly with outdoor seating in the garden which the old railway line runs through.
  6. Thesen Harbour Town has a great kiddies playground right next to Col’Cacchio and Tapas & Oysters restaurants.
  7. Book an excursion with Knysna Hike & Bike, for customised walks and cycles with knowledgable locals, Anne and Mandy (082 892 1361)
  8. Adventure Land Water Park : Centrally situated between Plett and Knysna with easy access off the N2 on 24 ha where you can relax and enjoy a braai or picnic on the large lawns or a wooden deck while the kids enjoy the water activities and playground. For children of all ages.
  9. Jubilee Creek One of the best picnic spots in the area, with a beautiful stream running through it and surrounded by indigenous forest, there are lovely walks for the whole family.
  10. Totties Farm Kitchen – Take a drive out to Rheenendal to the popular family country restaurant which has a kiddies play area. Open for breakfast, lunch and teas from Wed – Sat, 8am to 4pm and for Sunday lunch buffet 12pm – 3pm.
  11. The Montessori Friday Supper and Craft Market Friday Market: Narnia Lane, Welbedacht - food stalls, handicrafts and entertainment for the kids. Open September - June, every week from 4 – 8 pm and until 8:30pm during school holidays. Supervised parking, seating and shelter, bonfires and live music.
  12. Hire bikes for the whole family in Sedgefield from Cycleworx (044 343 1710), or in Knysna from Knysna Cycle Works (044 382 5153). GOnow Electric bike hire (044 382 0321) has e-bikes for hire.
