Every festive season, Knysna Tourism’s Sedgefield office invites residents of Sedgefield andKnysna Visitor... Knysna to reach out and make a child smile. The Sedgefield area, which includes Karatara and Fairview, is not always included in local funding initiatives and so, for the fifth year in a row, locals were asked to “adopt” a family and make a pledge to spoil them a little.
Sedgefield Tourism manager Belinda Hobson, who drives the project, says that each year different children are selected as beneficiaries.
“With the help of Masithandane and the Department of Social Development we pre-selected a number of local families that had a difficult 2017. Then members of the community pledged to buy an age appropriate gift for the children of the family assigned to them and provide a food hamper for the guardians.“
The goods were dropped off at the Sedgefield office for Belinda and her ‘elves’ to deliver, thereby maintaining the anonymity of the families.
“This year we are able to add 17Santa Shoeboxes which were extras, from Dee Roberts and Barbara Stedman. Thanks to the generosity of our community, a total of 37 children were blessed this Christmas.”
The parcels were delivered by Belinda, Nicole Moore (Information and Reservation Officer at Sedgefield Tourism), and caregiver Lucille Nellfrom Masithandane on 11 December. Says Belinda: “I wish that those who pledged had had the pleasure of seeing the smiles on these children’s faces and the joy of those who care for them. Thank you for your generosity and may you all be richly blessed this festive season.”
